After the great finish to the 05/06 season, hopes were high for 06/07. The addition of Cameron Kershaw, Ed Jowett and Josh Clarke to an already strong squad meant that Whinmoor started the season as one of the favourites for promotion in a much more sensibly set out league - only 14 league games instead of the previous seasons 26. The season started off with a defeat, however, as Whinmoor took a little time to get going, and by the time the cup campaign started in December, the title hopes had all but gone after we had suffered 3 league defeats. Drawn against higher division opposition in the cup, though, Whinmoor managed to overcome Otley 4-2, and then hammered Pannal Panthers 7-2 in the second round, putting Whinmoor through to the semi-final. The league remained a tough nut to crack, epitomised by a very tight 1-1 draw at home to Boroughbridge, but confidence started to grow as the league form improved, and the cup semi final victory against Knaresborough, another top division side, remains one of the finest results ever achieved by this side. After defeating Ilkley to give the title to Pannal Sports, Whinmoor played in their first cup final against runaway league champions Pannal Ash. On that day, they aquitted themselves extremely well, and were still in the game right up to the very end, with Pannal Ash supporters saying that it was the hardest game they had faced all season.
Although Whinmoor again only missed out on promotion by two points - the home defeat to Killinghall proving crucial - the cup provided the highlight for this season, and the day out at the final will stay with the boys for a long time. 'Keeper Chris Ling and defensive powerhouse Ed Jowett took the player of the year gongs, and Harry Uttley once again provided the lions share of the goals. The future looked bright going into the 07/08 season!
